What is the Internet

Some numbers about Internet

WEB growth

The web has grown very fast. In fact, the web has grown substantially faster than the Internet at large, as measured by number of hosts.

How many hosts in the world ?

The Domain Survey attempts to discover every host on the Internet by doing a complete search of the Domain Name System. The DNS is a global naming system. Its primary task is to translate machine names (like www.esteri.it) which people can understand into IP addresses (such as 156.168.0.1) which machines can understand. It does this by assigning each organisation a domain. This usually reflects the organisation name, and country.
