CAPTION:

A brief ceremony took place this afternoon at U.N. Headquarters, in New York, on the occasion of the first raising of the flags of the sixteen new Member States of the United Nations. Here, Secretary-General Dag HAMMARSKJOLD (right) shakes hands with Representative Alberico CASARDI, of Italy as a U.N. Guard raises the Italian flag. Other representatives from new Member Countries are Dr. MATSCH (Australia), Mr. SZARKA (Hungary) and Mr. NOGUEIRA (Portugal). The Hungarian, Portuguese, Irish and Jordanian flags are already flying at right (9 March 1956).
