What is an Intranet

An Intranet is an organization's private network.

It is located behind the organization's security firewall and is reserved for internal use.

The tools used for an intranet are typically the same ones used for the Internet. In fact one of the greatest advantages of an Intranet is that it is a mini World Wide Web. This allows you to use the same software (i.e. web servers and web browsers) to browse not only the Intranet and company information but the World Wide Web as well. This means big cost savings for the company on software development and purchases.

Printed information such as procedures, reference documents, staff directories, calendars of events training manuals, memos, newsletters, etc. are usually distributed on paper. With an Intranet, up to date private corporate information can be distributed internally more quickly and without tons of paper piling up.
