Towards a paperless world ?
Will the Net replace libraries?
While the Net is disorganized, libraries are organized. Alongside search engines that look for
keywords in the text of a Webpage (such as
Altavista
or
Hotbot
), a service invaluable in reserch
others, using directories such as
Yahoo
, are reinventing versions of the standard, proven
classification schemes that libraries have always used. Some people are even adopting the Dewey
system to organize Web sites (see the Expanding Universe site for example). Most noticeably, the
Net doesn't use standardized subject headings, an important tool for accessing information in
libraries. Moreover, the whole Net cannot be accessed from within a library, but an entire library can't
be accessed from the Net.
