Duties and responsibilities Under the general
supervision of the Chief, Statistical Development Service and the immediate supervision of
the Senior Officer (Statistical Development), provide technical support to field projects
in food and agricultural statistics including project identification, formulation,
implementation, monitoring and evaluation. More specifically to:
- identify and formulate projects in food and agricultural statistics, specifically in
connection with the FAO/World Bank initiative to strengthen agricultural statistics in
Africa;
- provide technical backstopping to, and monitor and evaluate field projects;
- carry out studies and advise on the development and implementation of national
programmes of food and agricultural statistics and on the organization of the
administrative structures necessary to support these programmes;
- advise on the organization and conduct of agricultural censuses and surveys,
including the use of appropriate methodologies and the training of national personnel;
- prepare documents on statistical techniques likely to be used in agricultural
surveys;
- organize and participate in meetings, seminars and training courses;
- assist in the selection, briefing and guidance of FAO consultants and experts;
- perform other duties as required. |
Qualifications and experience -
Essential
Advanced university degree in statistics with specialization in survey methods or sampling
theory. Seven years progressively responsible professional experience in agricultural
statistics in national institutions and/or international organizations including
field experience in agricultural censuses and surveys and wide experience of food and
agricultural statistics systems in the African Region;
Working knowledge (Level C) of English or French, and limited knowledge (Level B) of
the other.
Ability to assess countries needs for technical assistance and to formulate
project proposals; to edit and review statistical reports and studies; to organize and
conduct technical meetings, seminars and training courses; to write clearly and concisely
and make effective oral presentation; to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. Computer
literacy and ability to effectively use word processing equipment, maturity, initiative,
tact and a high sense of responsibility; fitness and willingness to travel.
Qualifications and experience - Desirable
Advanced degree in statistics; knowledge of micro-computers and their use for
processing survey data; knowledge of FAO field programmes and procedures; working
knowledge (level C) of the other specified language (English or French).
